The EV Charging Market Across the Globe

Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained significant traction in the global automotive market. However, it does not immediately follow that EV Supply Equipment (EVSE), or chargers, have shared the same success. While the domestic public EVSE development in the U.S. is not lacking, data from the IEA’s Global EV Outlook shows that other regions may be ahead.

Major Players

The EV market powerhouses are China, Europe, and the United States. China is projected to have the highest revenue of $377 billion in the EV market in 2025, with the EU-27 and the U.S. respectively projected for $162 billion and $96 billion (Statista). These leaders are developing charging networks, but each region faces unique challenges:

  • The Chinese government’s policy-guided success in rapid EVSE growth (reaching 3.3 million public chargers in 2024) came with dense EVSE concentration in urban areas, which poses stress on city power.

  • Europe’s public EVSE point growth, reaching 1 million in 2024, had an uneven distribution, Netherlands, Germany, and France accounting for nearly half of the EVSE. The steady development needs quickening to meet the EU's goal of 8.8 million by 2030.

  • The U.S. is following the steps of China and Europe, having installed 200,000 points in 2024. More renewably sourced infrastructure and expansion in underserved regions can build the U.S.’s resilience.

The Winning Cases

In Europe, Dutch cities like Amsterdam implement effective local policies stemming from a strong commitment to sustainable transportation. Elsewhere, Korean authorities carried their DC fast charger (DCFC) stock growth plans through. The 40% increase for EVSE budget in Korea is intended for installing 4,400 FCDCs in 2025 than the previous year, which is quite the jump compared to the nation’s size. The development of FCDCs is picking up, as observed in India, where three government-owned companies installed nearly 8,000 fast charging points throughout 2023 and 2024.

Only when governments enact real, non-pretentious strategies will EVSE’s objective be fulfilled: to support EVs in their sustainable path to electric mobility. Balancing the speed of growth with demand and grid support will help sustain the expansion of EVSE.

The Foreseeable Future

In China, concerns about grid stability due to rising energy demands from increased EVSE could lead to a larger focus on advanced grid management and smart charging solutions.

Europe may see a more pressured increase in public charging points due to the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) that mandates the installation of FCDCs every 60 km along its core road network by 2025, with a required total power output of 400kW per station. This regulatory push will likely encourage EV adoption across the continent. Meanwhile, the U.S. could face slower infrastructure development due to some regulatory pauses. However, the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program has resumed for some states after a temporary freeze in funds.

These regulatory mandates (e.g., AFIR, NEVI, or Chinese subsidies) help support the global shift towards electric mobility. Globally, there are diverse approaches in establishing a reliable EV charging infrastructure, which have different effects based on the rigor of implementation. The shift towards FCDCs is gaining momentum, providing higher quality in public EVSE, and viveEV is ready to support this transition.
